«One of the deeply meaningful paradoxes of the Russian world of the Caucasus was the attitude of Russian officers towards the external attributes inherent to the mountaineers.

Mountaineers' costume, which obviously began to be worn by Russian officers and Cossacks from the time of Yermolov (some parts of the Caucasian corps eventually received mountain clothes as an official military suit), initially had far more serious meaning than simply comfortable combat clothing.

The clothes of the Caucasian Corps from the same Yermolov times were no less convenient. And yet ... We have a lot of evidence about the role played by the mountain costume in the self-awareness of the Russian officer.

Lermontov wrote in the same essay: "He (the Russian officer) think like a Tatar; He had a sword, with a real label, a dagger-an old basalay, a cuban (river Cuban') gun, an excellent Crimean rifle, which he lubricates himself, a horse-pure Shalloh and the whole Circassian costume, which is worn only in important cases and sewn to him as a gift by some wild Princess. His passion for everything Circassian comes to unbelief».

Zisserman, who served in the Caucasus for a quarter of a century, wrote in his memoirs: «The Chechens themselves would not doubt me to recognize me as their fellow countryman, so I was transformed by a few years' stay among the mountaineers and carried away by the poetic side of their militant half wild life. Well, outwardly, there's nothing to talk about: a shaved head, a small fair-haired goatee, a suntanned face, a suit, weapons and all the amenities to the finest detail were not inferior to the original».

The Russian conquerors consider the greatest achievement to be the maximum identification of themselves with the mountaineers. When Lermontov wrote that Pechorin was proud of his indistinguishable resemblance to the Circassian, he knew what he had said: «Ever since I left Russia ... I traveled the line all along, from Kizlyar to Taman, moved the mountains, was in Shusha, to Cuba, In Shemakha, in Kakhetia, dressed in Circassian fashion».

This is from a letter to a friend S. Raevsky in 1837. It is possible to assume with reasonable probability that Lermontov's mockery of Martynov, in a peaceful setting, worn an exaggerated mountain costume – «a highlander with a large dagger»! It was precisely this profanation that was caused by the custom, the deep essence of which Lermontov understood.

Zisserman is proud that he cannot be distinguished from the Chechen. And, it's not just self-esteem. The governor of the Caucasus, Vorontsov, who grew up and brought up, as we know, in England, was delighted with the sight of Zisserman. General Zass, famous for his forays into the mountain villages, not only wore the Circassian suit himself, but his entire entourage was dressed the same way.

Wearing a mountain costume by Russian officers was a landmark phenomenon. It meant the desire to merge into the primordial world of the Caucasus, thus separating itself from the Russian world (without losing the sense of imperial patriotism).

This desire could arise and be conducted with such perseverance only if the world of the Caucasus was perceived as something more significant than the Russian world. And, consequently, the mountaineer, who was copied by Russian officers, was perceived as a person with a higher existential status. Highlander was perceived as a carrier of freedom, inaccessible to the Russians.

The Slavophiles' love for the Russian dress - the pre-Petrine era: they wore this dress as a challenge, as a symbol of the denial of Europeanism. It was a deliberate opposition action, but rather superficial and artificial. Slavophiles did not try, and could not get used to the worldview of the pre-Petrine Russian man. Circassian dress of the Russian «Caucasian» was, in fact, the same challenge, but rather subconscious and therefore more profound. The Russian officer organically perceived the world of the Caucasus as his own.

Circassian dress, horse boarding, guns – imitation image of djigit. Djigit – the concentration of free human virtues and the highest praise for the highlander, and for the Russian.

And here again we need to recall the principle of "psychological compensation", which was already discussed. The writer, publicist Eugene Markov, the author of the best analysis of the Tolstoy's «Cossacks», who traveled the Caucasus and understood it well, wrote in the 1880s:
«When one looks at Lezgins and our brother Vakhlaq at the same time, Russian gives the impression of a clumsy Herbivorous animal next to a stately and brave predator. The lezgin has a variety of variegated attire of some panther or leopard, grace and flexibility of her movements, her terrible power embodied in elegant steel forms».

Of course, Markov exaggerates the contrast. Cossacks-lineets often did not concede to mountaineers in combat training and skill. But it is obvious that the Russian officer was aware of the difference in his capabilities and the capabilities of the highlander. And it was not just a purely military competition.

Highlander fit perfectly into the world around, which created the basis of his high self-awareness. While imitating external forms, the Russian officer, consciously or subconsciously, strove to catch up with the highlander precisely in the relationship with the world».

But that's not the point. The material is given the image of a Cossack of the past, a descendant of free Cossacks, who, deprived of the most important thing – will, turned into a soulless estate that went for atrocities to its own womb. Today, other Cossacks have been created. They no longer have anything to do with the historical Cossacks. Their task is to faithfully serve a caste of thieves.

In this sense, the international Police may not be too reliable.
